Ocnele Mari Salt Mine
Local name: Salina Ocnele Mari
The Ocnele Mari salt mine is located in the village of the same name, 8 km from Râmnicu Vâlcea. Since 2009, it has been partially open to the public. You can get to the interior of the mine by a special minibus, which runs regularly every half an hour. The journey usually takes about 10 minutes. There is a constant microclimate underground and the temperature is around 13-15 C, so it is worth taking care of warmer clothes before the visit.
In the mine, you can see the corridors and pits where salt was extracted. There is also an extensive recreational and leisure space with a playground for children, a restaurant, a wine bar and sports fields.
It is worth mentioning that the history of salt mining in the Ocnele Mari area dates back to the Neolithic era. It was then continued in the Bronze and Iron Age, as evidenced by the tools found here during archaeological excavations.
