The Athenaeum was built in the center of Bucharest in 1888. It is housed in an ornate, domed building. It is not only the main city concert hall, but also the seat of the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. Every year the international George Enescu music festival takes place here.
The building was built in the neoclassical style with romantic elements. Right in front of it is a small park with a monument to the Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu. Inside the building there is a spacious, richly decorated room that can seat 600 spectators. It is worth paying attention to the frescoes decorating its wall. They present the most important events in the history of Romania, from the conquest of Dacia by the Roman emperor Trajan and ending with the creation of Great Romania in 1918.
The building was recognized as a symbol of Romanian culture. In 2007, it was also included in the list of European Heritage Marks.
