Parliament House

Local name: Palatul Parlamentului

The seat of the parliament is a neoclassical palace with a rather eclectic character. It houses approx. 1,100 rooms, including 440 offices, 30 multi-functional rooms, restaurants, libraries and 2 underground parking lots. The building weighs over 4 billion tons and was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the heaviest in the world.

The palace is 86 m high and consists of 12 floors above ground and 8 underground, with only 4 of them operated by 2020. Among them is also the nuclear bunker. The building was entirely built of materials from the country - marble, crystal, steel, bronze and various types of wood. The interior is richly decorated with expensive rugs, velvet and brocade curtains, and silver and gold haberdashery.

The construction of the palace began in 1984. The commencement of works forced the demolition of nearly 7 km2 of the Old Town and the resettlement of approximately 40,000 inhabitants.
