Vila Real is a town surrounded by the vineyards of the Douro area. It is a mixture of old and new architecture and can also be a great starting point to the mountainous area of Serra do Alvão.
The city has existed since the 13th century and developed as a trade center at the crossroads. Fairs were organized here, which brought very high income. Currently, not much of the old buildings has survived, but you can still find interesting places.
In the center of Vila Real, the most impressive building is the Se Cathedral from the 15th century, built in the Gothic style. You can also see the town hall building with the city pillory and the former marquis' palace. The explorer and traveler Diogo Cao was born in Vila Real, and you can visit his family home in the old town.
One of the biggest attractions of Vila Real is the Mateusz Palace on the outskirts of the city. this baroque residence surrounded by beautiful gardens has been preserved almost intact. You can admire the original interiors filled with antique furniture, porcelain, artistic glass and jewelery. The house is recognizable thanks to its placement on the label of Mateus Rose wine, which is produced in the area.
