The Cathedral of Braga dedicated to the Virgin Mary is the main and most important center of Catholicism in Portugal - mainly because it houses the archdiocese of this country. Established in 1070 and built in the Romanesque style, which over the centuries has been enriched with Gothic, Baroque or Moorish elements.
The cathedral attracts visitors not only by its architectural beauty, but also by its long history - the diocese dates back to the third century AD, making it one of the oldest centers of Christianization on the Iberian Peninsula. We can learn more about the cathedral's history and valuable items related to this place in the Cathedral Museum.
Noteworthy is the main chapel rebuilt in 1509 thanks to Archbishop Diogo de Sousa. On its outer wall we will see a beautiful statue of the Madonna breastfeeding Jesus from the beginning of the 16th century. In the interior, however, it is worth paying special attention to the main chapel with the 14th-century figure of the Virgin Mary or the ceiling of the High Choir.
