Arch of the New Gate

Local name: Arco da Porta Nova

The New Gate Arch located in the city of Braga in Portugal is a mix of baroque and classical style. The Arco da Porta Nova foundation was built as early as the 16th century, while the baroque part is the work of André Soares from the 18th century. The arch is one of the most characteristic elements of the city, often used in image campaigns.

Interestingly, the history of this place dates back to the Middle Ages: during the reign of King Ferdinand I of Burgundy in 1373, the construction of the wall surrounding the city of Braga was completed. However, it wasn't until 1512 that the triumphal arch was created that adorns the western entrance. Arco da Porta Nova is a magnificent structure 7.5 meters high and two meters wide, traditionally used as a place for official celebrations, including to present city keys to dignitaries and famous Portuguese personalities. Today it has the status of a national monument.
