Serra da Estrela Natural Park

Local name: Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela

The Serra da Estrela Natural Park is located in the northeast of Portugal. It mainly covers the mountain area characterized by interesting rock formations, which often have their own names, e.g. the head of an old woman or a thick pitcher. It stretches over an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometers. It offers many attractive trekking routes. Black oak is protected in the reserve and bitterness is threatened with extinction. It is home to many species of birds, amphibians and lizards. It is worth visiting the villages at the foot of the mountains, which arose in the Middle Ages.

In the park you can see large tracts of pastures with flocks of sheep grazing on them. This is where the characteristic regional cheese Queijo da Serra comes from, which is produced according to a traditional method. Handicrafts such as chestnut and wicker baskets, embroidered cotton and woven materials are also popular.
