The Felgueiras Lighthouse is a hexagonal, neoclassical building 10 meters high. It has a red balcony and roof, which makes it quite a characteristic and clearly visible point of the landscape. Huge ocean waves crashing against this building are often used as a subject for photography and postcards. In addition to the lighthouse, it is worth visiting the historic district of Foz do Douro.
The Felgueiras lighthouse was built in 1886. In 1945 the monument was modernized and automated in 1979. In 2009 the lighthouse was deactivated and now it only emits a sound signal. Before deactivating it, the rear light was within 9 nautical miles and emitted a red signal every 5 seconds. The name "Molhe de Felgueiras" is due to the fact that the lighthouse faces the Felgueiras stone.
