Church of Saint Lawrence

Local name: Igreja de São Lourenço

Convento de São Lourenço, or the church of St. Wawrzyńca is a 16th-century Catholic church in Porto built in the style of Italian mannerism. The interior is quite richly decorated - the ceilings and columns are covered with gold, and the Baroque altars are full of sculptures of saints. It is also worth visiting the archaeological museum located here offering a collection of Roman works found in Porto. Classical concerts also take place in the church.

City residents call this temple Igreja dos Grilos, which literally means the Church of Swierszcz. The name is not accidental. When the Jesuits settled in Lisbon, their headquarters was located on the street called Rua do Grilo (street Świerszczy). In 1577, monks came to Porto to build a new church. City residents joked about the origin of priests and began to call them Padres Grilos (Fathers Świerszcze). The funny nickname has survived to this day.
