The church of Saint Michael is located in the Alfama district. It is a Mannerist-Baroque building with a two-tower facade. The interior is covered with gilded decorations made of wood. You can see a series of sixteen religious paintings by Bento Coelho.
The church of Saint Michael was erected in Lisbon already in the 12th century. At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, it was thoroughly rebuilt in Mannerist style. Unfortunately, soon after, a major earthquake damaged the building. The reconstruction added baroque features to the temple.
It is a one-nave church with a simple block and whitewashed facade with carved stone elements. The interior has rich decorations that are characteristic of Portuguese Baroque.
