Dr. Anastacio Goncalves House-Museum

Local name: Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves

The Anastacio Goncalves Museum is a museum of applied and decorative art. It is based in an Art Nouveau villa from the beginning of the 20th century. The Goncalves collection includes, among others, Portuguese naturalistic painting from the 19th century, furniture from various European countries, Chinese porcelain, as well as jewelry, medals and artistic glass.

Anastacio Goncalves was an ophthalmologist and art collector. He shared his passion with a friend, millionaire Calouste Gulbenkian. In 1932, for the purposes of storing and sharing his collection, he bought one of the most characteristic Art Nouveau houses in Lisbon, the house of the painter José Malho, who in 1905 won the prize for the most beautiful building in Lisbon.

On two floors of the villa, you can see art objects from different European and Asian countries. There are dishes, ceramics, artistic glass, furniture, often beautifully decorated, a collection of medals and coins, rugs and artistic fabrics. The museum boasts one of the largest collections of native naturalistic painting in Portugal.
