Church of the former Convent of Discalced Carmelites

Local name: Igreja do antigo Convento de Carmelitas Descalças

The Cardais Monastery Church is one of the best examples of the so-called national baroque style in Portugal. Behind the simple facade, in the regular block of the building, there are wonderfully decorated, dripping gold interiors, in which azulejos tiles were also used for decoration.

The church was built in 1681. It survived in a relatively good condition a great earthquake from 1755. Outside, the church is not special. However, the interior makes a completely different impression. Decorations made of azulejos tiles were placed on the walls. The white and blue panels present very high artistic value. Similarly, with beautiful, carved and gilded altars that look like they consisted of millions of small decorative elements. The painting in the main altar depicts the Virgin Mary adored by Carmelite saints, while the paintings on the walls show the story of Saint Teresa of Avila.
