The Church of the Incarnation of the Mother of God is located in the Chiado district. It is a baroque-neoclassical building with an impressive facade decorated with carvings depicting Marian scenes. The interior is covered with geometric painting decoration. In the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus there is an eight-pole dome.
The first church was built in Chiado in the 17th century. It was completely destroyed during the earthquake in 1755. The current temple was erected at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries as part of the reconstruction of the city after the cataclysm.
The church has a towerless facade divided by pilasters and topped with a triangular tympanum and an attic with carved vases. The interior has one nave with eight side chapels arranged symmetrically on both sides. A large part of the interior decoration has neoclassical features. There are mainly geometric painting decorations and masonry finishes made in various types of marble. Among the chapels, the one dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands out. It was built on an octagonal plan and covered with an eight-pole dome. You can also see a beautifully carved baroque plaid.
