Church of Madalena

Local name: Igreja da Madalena

The Church of Saint Magdalena is located in the Old Town of Lisbon. It is a Baroque building with a simple facade decorated with Neo-Romanian portals. The interior is richly decorated with marble sculptures and paintings by Pedro Alexandrino.

The first church in this place was built in the 12th century. It was repeatedly destroyed by various cataclysms, but it was always rebuilt. The last disaster occurred in 1755. During the great earthquake the church disappeared from the face of the earth. The current temple was built at the end of the 18th century.

It is a baroque building made of stone. The one-story facade is divided by pilasters. It has large, semi-circular windows. Three entrances lead into the interior, surrounded by neomanueline portals. The interior is made of stone. They are decorated with multiplied columns and pilasters, and carved side altars. The paintings hanging on the walls were made by the well-known painter of that period, Pedro Alexandrino.
