The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is run by the Foundation of his name. It has the country's most coherent and largest collection of works of art by contemporary Portuguese artists. Sculpture, painting, graphics and photography are presented here. The collection is constantly updated.
Calouste Gulbenkian was from Armenia. He made a huge fortune looking for oil deposits in the Middle East. During World War II he settled in Lisbon, where he died in 1955. As one of the richest people on Earth at that time, he allocated a large portion of his income to charity. He also collected art collections, which after his death went to museums in many European cities.
Gulbenkian's work is continued by his Foundation. It is still expanding collections of contemporary art. The Museum presents works created since the founder's death in 1955, to the present day. Due to the fact that the collection is not closed, the exhibition changes, new works of new artists are bought and displayed. Currently, the Museum's collection includes works by 1,200 modern Portuguese artists.
