The Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro Museum presents a cross-section of the work of this versatile Portuguese artist of the turn of the century. There are, among others, his paintings and graphics, as well as ceramic products, including the most recognizable products with the motif of cabbage and pumpkin leaves.
Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro was a writer and artist, and for many years also the director of the faience factory in Caldas de Rainha. Thanks to his activity, the tradition of creating ceramics in Portugal was renewed. He also dealt with plastic arts, creating paintings, drawings and sketches.
The Rafael Bordalo Museum has several thousand of his works in its collection. They are presented chronologically so that the viewer can follow the development and changes occurring in his work. The most famous department of the museum is the one about ceramics. In addition to the famous plates and bowls with leaf motifs, you can also see a large, gilded jug of Talha Manuelina, referring to the works and decorations of the Manueline style.
