The church was built at the end of the 15th century by Adão Gonçalves Ferreira, the first European born in Madeira. Today's temple stands on the site of the first church destroyed during the earthquake and dates from the eighteenth century. It is a three-nave building with a two-tower facade, in which a statue of the Virgin Mary was placed. On August 15, the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a great street procession takes place here combined with a street market and dancing.
