Ferragudo is a small town on the Algarve coast with beautiful beaches. The town resists commercialization and has retained its authentic character with a small port and low, whitewashed tiled houses.
Despite the development of tourism in this part of the coast, Ferragudo still has the unique atmosphere of a former fishing village. The narrow streets are paved with stone, and next to them are whitewashed houses with blue and yellow elements. The quayside in the harbor has many restaurants and bars serving fish and seafood dishes, and the picture is complemented by fishing boats swaying on the water.
One of the highlights of Ferragudo is the Castle of São João do Arade at the mouth of Rio Arade. It is a structure that was erected as part of the fortifications of nearby Portimão. Today it is in private hands and can only be viewed from the outside.
Most tourists who come to Ferragudo look for a beach holiday. The most famous are Caneiros Beach and Angrinha Beach. The beaches of Afurada and Mato are best accessed by boats due to their location at the foot of steep, spectacular cliffs.
