Żary Castle

Local name: Zamek w Żarach

The palace complex in Żary was declared a well preserved ruin, but the lack of access allows only to see them from afar. The entrance is possible on the interurban, and for the brave - to the deep basements. The complex has a castle and much more ruined palace. The castle is worth noting the arcaded courtyard, polychrome-style Gothic and Renaissance and other decorative items.

The founder of the complex was probably Albrecht Dewin, who built a small brick castle in the 13th century. Its surface was more or less equivalent to today's northern wing. The next owners - the Packers expanded their headquarters to the west wing, tower and fortifications. By the mid-14th century, the next owners had demolished the first structure and built the new von Biberstein castle. In the 16th century it was rebuilt to Renaissance style, adding cloisters with rich sgraffit decoration. Finally, in 1558, the castle was bought by the von Promnitz, who built a baroque palace called the new castle.

Since 1824 the castle served as a prison, during World War II was the seat of the Regional Museum of the district of Żary. In the last year of the war, the objects destroyed the fire and have since been systematically devastated since.
