The museum is dedicated to the history of prisoner-of-war camps since the times of Napoleon to World War II. The permanent exposition presents the great escape of 80 prisoners through the tunnel "Harry" from Stalag Luft III. The model of the tunnel in 1:1 scale with the recreation of the watchtower and part of the fencing can be seen next to the pavilion.
The history of German camps in these areas starts in 1813 when the Prussian authorities imprisoned soldiers of Napoléon Bonaparte. In the years between 1914 and 1918, Grünthal Camp was a prison for soldiers of the Imperial Russian Army, and in 1919 - participants of the Greater Poland Uprising. The museum is largely dedicated to stalags from World War II in Konin Żagański, Świętoszowo, and Żagań. They were intended for non-commissioned officers and privates of land forces from various states.Stalag Luft III is the most significant for the history. It was intended for pilots and crew members of American aircraft and British RAF. The stalag became famous after the great escape which was made into the known movie "The Great Escape" with many American stars.Less
