The Lobkowitz family's Palace in Żagań is considered one of the most beautiful residences of the Baroque period in Poland. The three-wing structure attracts attention with its richly decorated facade. Around the buildings there is a beautiful landscape park which can be visited without any restrictions. The palace now houses the Żagań Palace of Culture.
The current building was predated by a medieval castle built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The Baroque residence was built in the 18th century and its construction lasted 40 years. An interesting fact is that as many as 70 residential houses were demolished to create a park and provide the fitting landscape around the palace. The building consists of three floors, and its elevations are richly decorated with architectural details. The windows in stone frames, decorated with 197 gargoyles and images of the devil, look particularly beautiful.Sculptured devils have their own legend. Apparently, their author had run out his ideas in the middle of his work and, in order to finalize the task, he made a pact with the devil, who in return for his soul posed for the next sculptures. At the last figure Satan showed his true face. The sculptor was so frightened that he fell from the scaffolding and didn't decorate the last window.Less
