Hermitage of St. Brother Albert

Local name: Pustelnia św. Brata Alberta

Hermitage of Saint Brother Albert is part of the only monastic-hermitic complex in the Tatras. A wooden cottage was built in 1902 in the area of the female Albertine monastery. Visitors can see there a modest and rough looking cell of Brother Albert with a wooden reliquary that contains remains of the Saint Brother Albert and the Memorial Room dedicated to him where are, among others, his paintings. Visitors can buy souvenir pictures, postcards, and books there. The hermitage is situated by the popular blue route, from Kuźnice to Giewont, which in this section is called the Way of Brother Albert.

The building plot was donated by count Władysław Zamoyski, and reputedly Stanisław Witkiewicz was involved in the design of the buildings. The monks themselves built a hermitage and a chapel, and were supported by local highlanders. Brother Albert had been meeting many distinguished guests there, including Stefan Żeromski, Stanisław Przybyszewski, and Józef Konrad Korzeniowski.

On the area of monastery, fenced with high wall, is also a chapel of Saint Cross. Visitors can see the crucifix in front of which Brother Albert had prayed. Nearby there is also an obelisk dedicated to John Paul II who in 1997 visited this place, a statue of the Mother of God, and a small well.
