Bartek Oak

Local name: Dąb Bartek

The Bartek Oak, growing in Zagnańsk, is one of the oldest trees in Poland. Scientists estimate its age at 650-700 years. Currently, its spreading branches are upheld by special supports to prevent them from breaking.

Bartek is 30 meters high and about 10 meters in trunk girth. It is largely rotten. For several decades, it has undergone conservation and irrigation treatments to stop its dying out.

The Zagnańsk Oak was recognized in 1934 as the most important Polish tree. According to legend, John III Sobieski was resting under it and in the hollow of the tree he left the saber won in the Battle of Vienna.
