The museum deals with documenting the material culture of Western Cracovians. The open-air museum located at the foot of the Lipowiec castle is divided into four sectors: small-town, court, rural and religious. There are farms, a mill, an oil mill, a church and small rural architecture facilities. The oldest buildings come from the 18th century. A large folklore event, Etnomania, takes place in the museum in July.
The Vistula Ethnographic Park was opened in 1973. There are currently 25 buildings from Western Lesser Poland and elements of small rural architecture, such as chapels, wells and beehives. The open-air museum space has been arranged to give the visitor a feeling that he is in a real village. The houses are fully furnished, as well as numerous farm equipment and tools. House decorations are changed depending on the season.
The open-air museum in Wygiełzów organizes many outdoor events, demonstrations of ancient crafts and ceremonial performances. The most important event of the season is Etnomania, held in summer, combined with a folklore-inspired handicraft fair.
