Lipowiec Castle is located on the Lipowiec Hill, above villages Babice and Wygiełzów. Nowadays it is in a state of ruin. It is a gothic stone stronghold with a round tower. It is open for visitors and, what’s more, it is a great vantage point of the area.
It was built probably in the second half of the XIII century. From this period, foundation and lower parts of the round, once free-standing tower come from. A fortress, built on the rectangle plan, belonged to Cracovian bishops. It was also an important border watchtower between Lesser Poland and Silesia. It was a part of a chain of fortifications called Eagle’s Nests. In XVI century, it acted as a bishop’s prison. There is a related legend about appearing ghosts of a bishop and an abbot sentenced by him to death.
A castle built from the white stone consists of the upper castle with a tower and an inner courtyard, a foregate and a ward. In the rooms upstairs there is a small exhibition devoted to the castle’s history.
