Oświęcim Castle

Local name: Zamek w Oświęcimiu

Gothic Castle in Auschwitz stands on a hill on the banks of the river Soła. Today it consists only of a medieval tower and a 16th century residential building. The museum houses it. His main exhibitions are titled "The Royal City of Auschwitz". Old photographs, multimedia presentations, everyday objects and documents show the life of the city from the turn of the 19th century. There is also an archaeological exhibition whose most valuable exhibit is the tombstone of Mikołaj Myszkowski from the end of the 15th century.

The castle of Auschwitz was built in the 12th century. The oldest part of it is the later Gothic tower, covered with a tent roof. He was royal property. In the sixteenth century it began to decline and after the wars of Sweden fell into ruin. In the nineteenth century, the best preserved residential building and tower were adapted for storage purposes. After World War II it became the seat of the museum.

After a complete reorganization of the exhibition in 2008, it is a modern facility that uses new forms of communication. The exhibition "The royal city of Auschwitz" is an attempt to move visitors in time. The first rooms present a multimedia, three-dimensional walk in the old city made on the basis of old engravings, photographs and postcards. You can also see souvenirs from the Auschwitz offices and factories. The second part is reproduced interiors of bourgeois houses, both Polish and Jewish.
