Auschwitz II-Birkenau Memorial and Museum

Local name: Miejsce Pamięci i Muzeum Auschwitz II-Birkenau

The Museum and Memorial Site cover the area of two surviving parts of the Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II - Birkenau camps. You can see here, among others ruins of gas chambers and crematoria, fences, barracks, the famous railway ramp, where prisoners disembarked, as well as many souvenirs - clothes, photos, documents. The museum was established thanks to the efforts of former prisoners. In 1979, the site of the former KL Auschwitz-Birkenau was entered on the UNESCO list.

Already in April 1946, shortly after the war, the then Ministry of Culture and Art sent a group of former prisoners to Oświęcim, who were to create the concept of establishing a museum there. It was supposed to make the world aware of the scale of Nazi crimes and the enormity of the suffering of the people who were murdered here.

During the entire period of the functioning of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau, over 1 million people lost their lives here, over 90% of them Jews. About 70,000 Poles, 20,000 Gypsies and prisoners of many other nationalities also died here.
