Situated on the Oder, the island is connected with the land by Piaskowy Bridge, Tumski Bridge, and Młyński Bridges what creates an interesting enclave in the area of the Wrocław Old Town. The walking track leading to Słodowa Island starts here.
The area of around 5ha consists of one main street, one smaller and few dead-end streets. It contains the Church of Our Lady on Sand Island with the Gothic equipment, the building of University Library with the museum, the former Gothic church of Saint Anne operating today as a kindergarten, the baroque Orthodox church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, watermill and few residential buildings.One of the most important north-south roads ran through Sand Island. In the past, the island was a church property. Today's church used to serve as the monastery of Augustinians. After the dissolution of monasteries, the island passed to the hands of the municipality. The today's building of University Library consists of the special collections of around 3200 manuscripts and old prints from before 1501, cartographic collections, and graphics.Less
