The Monument to the Mermaid of Ustka stands by the stone pier on the eastern breakwater, near the lighthouse in Ustka. Earlier, a statue of John of Nepomuk stood in the same place, which was moved to the western part of the port. The mermaid statue was made of bronze by Jerzy Michał Rosa. It was unveiled in 2010.
The figure of the mermaid refers to the coat of arms of Ustka and the local legend. It tells about a poor widow whose only son went out to hunt against his mother's wishes. Months passed, and when he did not return, the woman broke down, convinced of her son's death. She was saved from starvation by a beautiful mermaid who brought her fish to the seashore every day. The son finally returned, with a catch so abundant that the family never experienced poverty again.
As a curiosity, it can be mentioned that the metal alloy from which the statue was made comes from a public fundraiser. At that time, over 400 kg of non-ferrous metals were collected, which were then melted down and the monument was cast.
