Basilica of Saint Hedwig of Silesia is the oldest sanctuary in Sliesia and a place sanctified by the cult of Saint Hedwig. Current décor and furnishing comes from many eras: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.
Inside the temple there are two precious chapels of Saint John and Saint Hedwig from thirteenth century, as well as – placed in the second one – an impressive sarcophagus of Saint Hedwig made of marble and alabaster. Worthy of attention are also: beautiful rococo altar, impressive pulpit and – situated on decorative gallery – organ screen from 1903. This monumental basilica is 80 meters long and 23 meters width.
Monastery complex together with basilica of Saint Hedwig was founded by prince Henry the Bearded in thirteenth century. It was the first building in Poland built in a gothic style. The church was rebuilt several times, and its current shape was obtained at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Fortunately, a monastery complex with basilica survived the Second World War without any damage. Situated in Trzebnica, it is one of the largest buildings in this part of Europe built at the turn of seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, on the site of the former building from the times of Henry the Bearded. Since 1870 it is in the hands of Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo. Sanctuary is located on the Cistercian route.
