St. Jame's Church

Local name: Kościół św. Jakuba

The interior of the 14th-century St. Jacob church in Toruń is a treat for lovers of sacred art from the 14th to the 16th century. The real pearl of the temple is the gothic crucifix depicting Christ hanging on the tree of life, whose twigs are wrapped around the sculptures of the 12 prophets of the Old Testament.

The walls of the church are decorated with valuable paintings from the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. The passion picture of the last days of Christ's life is also worth attention. Other attractive pieces of equipment include the Baroque main altar and renaissance organs from 1611 decorated with coats of arms and filigree sculptures. The unique external structure of the church is also magnificent, modeled on the stone Western European cathedrals, thanks to which the building was granted the status of the most beautiful Gothic sacred building in Toruń. The outer wall of the presbytery is decorated with an inscription indicating the commencement of construction works in 1309. Gothic architectural details and 14th-century paintings also decorate the interior of the presbytery.

At the foot of the sculpture of St. Jacob the Apostle, located in front of the church, is a symbol of a shell showing the temple, as an important stop on the pilgrimage route to the tomb of St. Jacob in Santiago de Compostela.
