St. Catherine’s Church

Local name: Kościół św. Katarzyny

A historic garrison church located near the Old Town Complex, belonging to the Roman Catholic military parish in Toruń. Built in the nineteenth century on the site of the historic church of Saint Catherine, which existed in the years 1360-1814. It has the status of a monument. The designer of this neo-Gothic building was the German architect Schönhals, although the legend of Teufel (from German Teufel, meaning the devil) as the builder of the church has been made among the inhabitants.

Earlier, the St. Catherine's Chapel, dating back to the 17th century, stood here. Destroyed under the influence of the Swedish Deluge and the Napoleonic Wars, until it was finally dismantled in 1814. In 1894, the construction of the present church has begun at St. Catherine's Square in the newly formed Wilhelmstadt district. The purpose of the temple was to serve the growing city, as well as the garrison of the Prussian Army, and then the Polish Army.
