The Mostowa Gate is one of the three city gates preserved to this day from the side of the Vistula River, built in 1432 in the place of the older gate existing here earlier. The red-brick, two-story construction on the rectangular plan has been equipped with an ogival passage. Today, the building houses the office of the municipal conservator-restorer.
The current name of the gate dates from around 1500, when there was still a wooden bridge on the Vistula river, which was the first permanent structure in Toruń. Before that, ferry crossings were taking place in front of the bridge, and the gate was called Przewoźna or Promowa. The destroyed bridge was pulled down in the middle of the 19th century after the construction of a nearby railway bridge. At the time of its construction, the Bridge Gate was considered to be very modern due to its unusual shape and rounded sides, resisting artillery fire. Additionally the gate was equipped with shooting holes that increased the effectiveness of resistance of its defenders. The placement of the structure indicates that in the past it was often in the water as a result of the river taking on after thaw. On the walls of the gate you can see boards with information about record floods.Less
