Tarnów Cathedral

Local name: Katedra Tarnowska

Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Gothic church towering over the Tarnów's main square. Its 72-meter tower is well-visible among other buildings in the center of Tarnów while its characteristic structure brings the attention of followers and tourists as well. The oldest part was built in the 15th century. The church's equipment is of similar age.

Throughout centuries, the aged cathedral was damaged many times. Some of the damage it suffered was very heavy. Because of numerous renovations and reconstructions, its original structure slightly changed.

It is worth to take a look at the Chapel of Sending of the Apostles with the 16th-century lierne vault and the monument of Barbara Tarnowska, and the south church porch with the stone portal from the 16th century. Other very valuable monuments are the Renaissance tombstone of three Jan Tarnowskis from the 16th century, the Gothic portal from the same period situated under the tower, and also the 15th-century seatings - seats located in the presbytery.
