Ruins of the Tarnowski Castle

Local name: Ruiny Zamku Tarnowskich

The ruins of the Tarnowski Castle are located on the slope of St. Martin, at an altitude of 303 m above sea level. The fortress was built in the years 1328-1331 by the castellan of Krakow Spicimir, advisor to Władysław Łokietek and Casimir the Great. Since 2009, on the second weekend of June, a knightly "Tournament for the fine of the ruler of Marcińska Góra" is organized in the castle.

Over the centuries, the castle has been expanded several times. In the mid-15th century, the wooden buildings were replaced with brick ones, and in the following century - by order of Hetman Jan Amor Tarnowski - the fortress was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. At that time, brick and earth fortifications were also erected around the castle.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the fortress was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. With the consent of Prince Janusz Aleksander Sanguszko, in the mid-18th century, some of the material from the castle ruins was used to build a church at the Bernardine Convent in Tarnów.
