The Strzelecki Park (Shooting Park) is the oldest park in Tarnów. It was founded in 1866. It is a parkland with an area of over 8 hectares. On its site there is a neo-Gothic Strzelecki Palace that now houses the BWA Gallery, the art nouveau House of the Gardener and a fountain decorated with statues of lions. In 1927, on the island on the park pond, the Mausoleum of General Józef Bem was built. General was buried here.
The creation and construction of the Tarnów park coincided with the founding of the Strzelecki Society (Shooting Society). The park received its name after it. Park alleys are shaded by different species of deciduous trees. There are also flower beds and pergolas. In 1927, it was decided to bury the ashes of General Józef Bem on the island of the park pond. Born in Tarnów, the hero of Poland and Hungary converted in the last years of his life to Islam and could not rest on any cemetery in Tarnów. His ashes were brought to Poland in 1929. The mausoleum of general Bem was designed by Adolf Szyszko Bohusz. It is a classicistic stone sarcophagus supported on three columns. Numerous tourists from Hungary come here and leave tricolor bows on the pond fence.Less
