The Ethnographic Museum in Tarnów is located in the 18th-century Onitsch manor house. There is one of the few exhibitions in Poland dedicated to the Roma and their culture. You can see Romani costumes, handicrafts, works of Romani artists, as well as complete train cars and photos documenting the life of Gypsies.
For centuries, the Roma have been a significant minority in Lesser Poland. They lived and still live in the vicinity of Tarnów. During World War II, like the Jews, they were exterminated by the occupation authorities. The exhibition at the Tarnów Ethnographic Museum reminds of the colorful, non-existent world of Gypsies.
The exhibition includes items of everyday use, equipment of rolling stock as well as characteristic costumes and musical instruments for the Roma. At the Museum building you can see carts that rode rolling stock a few dozen years ago. The museum organizes outdoor events, such as Gypsy Summer or Rhythms of the Year. He also commemorates the extermination of the Roma in Tarnów by organizing the Memorial Rolling Stock in Szczurowa every year.
