Ruins of the castle in Rytro

Local name: Ruiny zamku w Rytrze

The ruins are the remains of a fortification built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries on a hill above the Poprad valley. They are open to visitors, and their area offers a wide and picturesque panorama of the Beskid Sądecki. The remains of the tower, walls and the residential part have survived to the present day.

The building originally consisted of a residential building, a courtyard surrounded on three sides by walls and a tower. The entire fortification is made of sandstone. The first mention of them comes from the reign of Władysław Łokietek and most of the time the castle was royal property. Its task was to guard the Poprad valley along which an extremely important trade route to Hungary ran.

There are many legends connected with the history of the castle, it is also mentioned many times in various literary works, including the popular children's book - "Rogas z Doliny Roztoki" by Maria Kownacka.
