Ruins of the Rabsztyn Castle

Local name: Ruiny zamku w Rabsztynie

The ruins of the Rabsztyn castle are located in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland and belong to the Trail of Eagles' Nests. The Gothic stone castle is beautifully situated under a picturesque limestone rock. Nowadays, after the renovation works, the castle can be visited. There is a small exhibition in the gate building, and from the walls of the upper castle one can admire the magnificent landscape of the area. In July there are knights' tournaments taking place, which are visited by reenactors from all over Poland.

The Rabsztyn castle was built in the 13th century. Casimir the Great strengthened it and surrounded by the stone walls. As a defensive stronghold, the castle had functioned until the beginning of the 17th century. It was then that Zygmunt Myszkowski built the lower castle under the rock in the form of a Renaissance mansion. The walls of this building are still visible next to the entrance gate. The fall of the castle had began during the Swedish Deluge. In the 19th century, it was basically only a source of building blocks for the local population. Protective and reconstruction works were undertaken only at the beginning of the 21st century.

Renovation work included, besides securing the entry gate and the Renaissance building, rebuilding the upper castle. It stands on top of limestone rock. During the construction, archaeological excavation was also carried out. It allowed finding tools, weapons, and objects used in the castle. They are presented in the hall at the gate building. An observation deck was built on the walls of the upper castle
