Bernardine Church and Monastery

Local name: Kościół i Klasztor Bernardynów

The 15th-century Bernardine Church is characterized by its Gothic facade. Its interior consists of, among others, the Baroque main altar with the miraculous painting of Our Lady of Consolation and the depiction of Saint Barbara, richly decorated Baroque seatings, illusionist Rococo side altars, and also fragments of Renaissance and Baroque paintings. The monastery's cloisters are decorated with the Gothic polychromy depicting scenes of Passion which was discovered in the 1960s. In the past, the complex in Przeworsk served as a stronghold - the preserved defensive walls from the 17th century can be seen to this day.

Built at the beginning of the second half of the 15th century, the monastery complex was founded by the then owner of the city - Rafał Tarnowski. Both the church and monastery were significantly extended throughout the years. In the 16th century, the presbytery was topped by a Mannerist top, and the tower was added. The Rococo chapel which houses the miraculous painting of Saint Anthony was built in the second half of the 18th century. What is interesting, a detention center for Galician priests operated here from 1822 to 1869.
