Dominican church and monastery

Local name: Kościół i klasztor Dominikanów

The main building of the Dominican monastery complex surrounded by walls is a magnificent late baroque temple with the status of a minor basilica. There is a late Gothic figure of Our Lady of Sorrows, so-called Heel.

In the Baroque and Rococo interior, you can also see the 18th-century altar with relics, among others St. John Paul II and extremely valuable baroque organs. In the monastery corridor, there are paintings illustrating the history of Pieta. Outside the walls is the Chapel of Apparition with a wonderful well.

The monastery complex was built in the place where, according to legend, in 1381 the figure of Our Lady of Sorrows was found. First a wooden chapel was built there, then a stone church. In the first half of the 17th century a monastery complex was erected, originally belonging to the Jesuits. Its current appearance is the result of reconstruction from 1698-1713 and from the mid-eighteenth century. After the dissolution of the Jesuit order, in 1777 the temple and monastery were handed over to the Dominicans.

During World War II, the Germans organized a warehouse in the church. Since 1942, the monastery complex has been serving the faithful again.
