Zasanie Cemetery was established in 1916 and originally served as an Austrian military necropolis. The cross dedicated to the fallen patriots towers over the area. It was made of pieces of the span of the bridge on San which was blown by the crew of capitulating Przemyśl Fortress. There are also two Russian cannons acquired during battles for the fortress, the chapel, and three gates from the times of founding of the cemetery. It's a place of rest of soldiers from two World Wars and also Ryszard Siwiec, the inhabitant of Przemyśl who, in 1968, self-immolate himself in Warsaw as a protest against the intervention of the Warsaw Pact's armies in Czechoslovakia.
The cemetery was designed by Hungarian engineer Franciszek Szabolcs. It consists of graves of Austro-Hungarian soldiers, the quarters of the Polish Legions, graves of soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces fallen during World War II and battles with UPA, and also soldiers of the Home Army murdered in the years 1943-1944. The mother of general Stanisław Maczek and Salesian priests related to Zasanie were also buried here. Currently, the necropolis serves as a municipal cemetery.Less
