Minor Basilica of st. James the Apostle
Local name: Bazylika Mniejsza pw. św. Jakuba Apostoła
The brick church was built in the Romanesque style at the end of the 12th century. It is the oldest church in Piotrków. When visiting the interior, it is worth paying attention to the beautiful main altar from the first half of the 19th century with the 16th-century painting "The Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary", a gift from Queen Bona. The rich furnishings of the temple also include side altars from the mid-18th century.
The church was founded by Piotr Włast in the early Middle Ages, then rebuilt in the Gothic style. Its present appearance dates back to the 14th century. It is distinguished by a gothic tower, 55 meters in the western part, finished with a baroque cupola.
In the 15th and 17th centuries it was one of the most important churches in the Republic of Poland, a meeting place for clergy and magnates from all over the country. In 2019, the temple was elevated to the title of a minor basilica.
