Castle in Piotrków District Museum

Local name: Zamek w Piotrkowie Muzeum Okręgowe

The museum is located in the Gothic and Renaissance residential tower commonly known as "castle". It consists of about 17 thousand ethnographical, archeological and historical exhibits, and pieces of art which number is still growing. Permanent exhibitions contain mostly monumental furniture, paintings, and weapons. They are dedicated to the history of the city and archeological monuments of the region.

The archeological collection originated from donations and archeological research carried out by the museum itself. It is the largest collection, however, it is not displayed because the facility lacks appropriate rooms for surveying those exhibits. Historical monuments are largely related to an army and militaria. There are numerous specimens of firearms and cold steel, soldier's equipment and uniforms.

The castle was built on the order of Sigismund I the Old in the 16th century. It served as a royal residence during sejms organized in Piotrków. It was built on an artificial hill and surrounded by a moat which was later removed.
