Bernardine Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Local name: Kościół Bernardynów Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego
The beautiful, baroque church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is part of the monastery complex of the Bernardine Fathers. The miraculous, graced image of Our Lady of Consolation, located in the side altar, is worshiped here. The painting, painted on a copper plate, was created in 1625. The miraculous image was coronated by Władysław Ziółek from Łódź in 2003. The church was also then proclaimed a sanctuary.
The first wooden church was built in the years 1624-1625. The brick, single-nave temple was erected soon later, in the years 1632-1642. During the Swedish Deluge, the church was partially destroyed, and the equipment and the temple treasury were stolen. Only after fifty years the church was re-consecrated - on January 29, 1696.
The Bernardines settled in Piotrków in the 17th century. The place was very popular with local residents and pilgrims. However, after the January Uprising, as part of repression, the Russian authorities abolished the order. The Bernardines did not return to the monastery until 1922.
