Jewish Museum and Synagogue

Local name: Muzeum Żydowskie i Synagoga

Jewish Museum and Synagogue are part of the Jewish Center in Oświęcim. Its modern and multimedia exhibition "Oszpiczyn. The history of Jewish Oświęcim" presents the history of this community throughout the ages. Synagogue Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot, on the other hand, is the only preserved prayer house in Oświęcim. After the renovation and recreation of its interior based on pre-war photographies, it serves today as a place for prayer and meditation for visiting Jews.

About half of the city's population were Jews until World War II. There are not many traces left of their community. Everything that preserved was brought to the Jewish Museum. Opened at the beginning of the 21st century, the exhibition presents the history of the community since it arrived in the city in the 16th century. There are documents, photographs, and everyday objects saved from the warfare. The museum also provides a multimedia app and virtual map which can be used during the exploration.

Synagogue Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot (Association of Those Who Study Mishna) was opened in 1918. It's a ground floor building with gable roof and semi-circular windows. Its interior consists of the prayer room with recreated bimah, Torah ark, and benches. The exhibition of photographies dedicated to the history of the synagogue is situated in the church porch.
