Town Hall and Market Square in Ostrów Wielkopolski

Local name: Rynek i ratusz w Ostrowie Wielkopolskim

The main square of Ostrów Wielkopolski is the Market Square. It is surrounded by houses from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The dominant feature of the square is the neo-Baroque town hall building. Built at the beginning of the 19th century, the building now houses a wedding hall and is the seat of the Museum of the City of Ostrów Wielkopolski.

The market square in Ostrów Wielkopolski was marked out during the creation of the city. Its buildings changed many times due to fires and war damage. The current one comes mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. The square is surrounded by picturesque tenements.

The most important building on the Market Square is the Town Hall. It was built in 1828 under the direction of Johann Heinrich Haberlin, who was later the court architect of German emperors. The building he designed represented the neo-Renaissance style. Later reconstructions gave it a neo-baroque character.

It is a three-storey, square building with a baroque tower embedded in the facade. Originally it had an internal courtyard, which was later roofed and surrounded by columns. The flat roof is covered by a high attic. The interior is entered through an arcaded portico.

The Town Hall houses the Museum of the City of Ostrów Wielkopolski. You can see three thematic exhibitions: historical, presenting the history of Ostrów until 1939, artistic, presenting works of artists associated with the city, and ethnographic, which shows the daily life of residents.
