Church of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr

Local name: Kościół św. Stanisława Biskupa Męczennika

The Church of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr is a co-cathedral in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kalisz. Its brick structure is characterized by the spire-tower and the extended presbytery surrounded by chapels. The interior and the facade are decorated with sculptures made of white sandstone. There are also neo-Gothic stained glasses depicting saints and scenes from the life of Christ.

Built in 1906, the parish church is the third church standing in this place. Its construction is related to the growing number of the Catholic community in Ostrów Wielkopolski. It was built in neo-Romanesque style in order to stand out among neo-Gothic German churches. In the beginning, it had a raw, white interior which Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz glorified in his letters. In later years, it was covered with polychromy with floral and geometric patterns and depictions of Polish saints on the vault.

The church was built on a Latin cross plan. It has decorative gargoyles next to the transept. The presbytery with the two-storied gallery is surrounded by chapels with side altars.
