Building of this Teutonic castle made of brick started in 1349 and it was supervised by Gunther von Hohenstein. Shortly after the building was finished, the castle was destroyed by Lithuanians. Later it was being burned and destroyed several times. Since the half ot the 1990s, several cultural institutions are located here – a library, a museum, a center of culture, a banquet hall and a gallery.
During the ongoing Prussian campaign of the First world War in 1809, Napoleon Bonaparte himself resided in the castle. Residence of such a prominent guest was commemorated in paintings, medals and graphics. Moreover, a mint in Paris minted a medal “Napoleon in Ostróda” in remembrance.
