Stilo lighthouse was built in the years 1904-1906. It was a very modern construction - made of ready-made, screw-jointed elements of cast steel (iron and carbon alloy, not wrought nor rolled), sealed with lead. Currently, it is one of three such structures in the world. It is also distinguished by its height and shape: a truncated pyramid with 16 walls rises to over 33 m.
The lighthouse stands on an elevation, 55 m above sea level, which means that the upper room of lighthouse is situated at an altitude of 75 m above sea level. Thanks to this, it was possible to obtain a unique range of light - it is visible from a distance of 23.5 nautical miles (about 44 km). At the top of the lighthouse there are two galleries, which are vantage points. Entering the gallery, one can accurately view the unusual, modular structure of the lighthouse. The lighthouse owes its name to the scourge of illegal forests logging, which took place at the end of the 18th century. Authorities, powerless against thieves, used the stratagem: they gave part of the forest to one of the inhabitants of nearby Bargędzin, in return for guarding the rest of the trees. The man's name was Michael Stylow. The place where the forest guard built his house was called Stielow, and later the name was shortened to Stilo.Less
